Stories about Grand Children

Books or videos?

I did say I read alot and that I think it´s important

to read loud to *our little people*.

That is why I keep telling all my stories here.

But there is another side of the same coin

and that is all videos (movies).

My children were born in the 70´s and early 80´s.

They are very much a product of the video era.

Nothing wrong with that as long as you,as a parent or grandparent,

really take time to sit with them while watching.

To use telly as a babysitter is no good.

But to sit together with them is really a very nice way of spending time with them,

sharing their feelings about what they see and also be ready for their questions.

There will be many questions, trust me.

Many of the video´s I have seen together with my children over the years

are really high quality.

All nice and funny from Disney for example.

There are also many cartoon series ( Japaneese). My youngest daughter loved all those.

Another aspect is........

When your favorite book turns in to a movie. (or episodes for Television)

I think you all know what I am talking about.

You read a book you absolutely love, you picture the people and places

from the images you get in your head while reading

and you do have a clear picture of how everything is.

And if it is a favorite book you can read it over and over again.

Everytime your picture of what´s going on get stronger

and nothing can convince you otherwise. You have your opinion set crystal clear :-)

Then a few years late a movie or a Televison serie is released.

Most of the time you get really dissapointed, since nothing is the way you though it was.

The people does not fit in,the places are all wrong

and lots of stuff from the book is simply missing.

And you end up wishing you never read the book before seing the movie.

Sometimes you feel the book is ruined for you, just because you did see the bad movie version.

That has happened to me more then once and everytime it is so disturbing.

On the other hand, sometimes you do love the movie,

without having read the book first and a good rule then

is to never go reading the book, just in case :-)

But we also have many cases where the movie,or serie turns out even better

then the book.

For example *The Little House on the praire* from Laura Ingalls books.

Michael Landon did an outstanding version of that and I just loved every episode.

Oh yes, we got that here in Sweden too ;-)I have them all on video.

Another one is * Anne of Green Gables*.(Lm Montgomery)

Just perfect, and the following up in *The road to Avonlea*,maybe even better

I just wish they had filmed the rest of the books too.

There are others like Margaret Mitchell´s *Gone with the Wind*.

That one is a classicer.

Who would ever forget *Roots* from Alex Haley´s book? Unforgivable that one.

This summer we have that on one of our TVchannels, again.

From Sweden we have Astrid Lindgren´s Pippi Långstrump(Longstocking)

Wellknown all around the world.

I did grow up with Pippi, sort of

More for children in Beatrice Potter´s *Winnie the Puh*.

So lovable in both versions, books or video. My grandkids just love the video´s about Winnie and his friends.

Also all, that has been made from Tolkien´s books.

Movies like *The Lord of The Rings*,*The Fellowship of The Ring* This is for a little older kids however.

And I am not sure here, the books might be better after all.

Then of cause we have the recent success in *Harry Potter*.

Same goes for that, both books and movies are outstanding.

I suppose I can go on forever, this list can be very long ;-) There will always be new ones.
