Going Shopping - Corfu Town

After a few days of sun and bath

you are ready for something else.
Or the weather suddenly changed.
Cloudy weather is perfect for a trip in
to Corfu Town.

Don´t go on a bright sunny day! It´s too hot!

The easiest way is to just wait for the bus along the highway.
There are bus stops outside all the big hotels so it´s easy to find.
Note, if you have a rental car, Corfu town is not easy to park in.
The only big parking space I know of is down at the Cricket Pitch,
just infront of the Old Fortress.

You have to wait forever for a free space since all corfiots park there too.

We did spend a lot of time trying to find an empty space on the streets,
but that can be tricky since you might find your car totally blocked ,
when you come back after shopping.
Take the bus and you don´t have to worry at all.

The bus will take you to the main bus stop downtown, at the old square.

From there you can very easy find all the nice streets for shopping.
Infact there are plenty nice small shops for clothing, toys, bags and other
leatherstuff just around the busstop.

Follow the long allé and you will get down to the marina with a beautiful
view over the sea and the Old Fortress.

Now you have a nice walk along the sea to get to the Fortress where
you also will find the famous Cricket Pitch and The Liston.
Trust me on this, once you get there, you will love to sit down in the shadow
of all them old tree´s, with a frappé, icetea or a coffee.

Just sitting there, looking at all them old houses from way back is enough

to picture how it must have been, when all the wealthy English Ladies went
for a walk on the street infront of them wonderful old palaces.
In fancy dresses and with umbrella´s of course, and with the nannies behind with
the babies in strollers.

For there has always been a lot of Brittish people living on Corfu.

It is not generally know on Corfu that the Duke of Edinburgh is Queen Elizabeth's
husband and that he was born near Corfu Town.
His Highness is of Royal Greek blood but that is a subject they try to avoid.

Well after a nice rest you have a rather long walk back to the bus station.

However you can walk through the old town and that is an adventure.
When standing in the middle of the narrow streets you can almost reach from
building to building. Just as my daughter is doing on the photo.
You will pass through the different markets(both the fish market and the bigger fruit
and vegetable market) and all the way you have nice little shops to look into.
Just before you reach the bus stop you will get a chance to see the main
shopping street, with bigger wellknown warehouses, such as Mark&Spencer.
The only one I remember the name on.

Now most of the day is gone and you need to take the bus back home to where
you live. Remember one thing, the shops close for a while in the afternoon, so the
best thing is to make sure you get an early start in the morning.
Make the most of the day!
