Cheers, Yamas, Skål!!

Publife in Gouvia.

Well this time of the year, late September,
the publife is a little bit calmer then in July.
Most guests are regulars coming back
same time every year.
There will also be many more from the locals
showing up at your favorite pub.

The off season is nice for everyone.
July and August can be really hectic.
In August there will be all Italians on holiday too.
The street will be very crowded and filled with
both people, cars and bikes.
The bikes you have to look out for since they are driving
very fast.
September is the time I like the most.

Just as with the restaurantes most of us also have our favorite pub.
No matter what, you will see us go back night after night.
We have all our friends there and we meet every year, if possible.
That is also part of the charm of being a returning guest :-)
All the nice people you meet.

For me and my family our favorite Pub is The Tudor In, just in the centre of Gouvia.
Very easy to find.
The owner is a very special friend now after all times going back.
And so are the others working there.
We have had so many great nights together with them.
So many nice memories, unforgettable moments. Like......
All the times it turned into a Greek evening, with dancing, smashing plates
and all kind of noices thank´s to the locals being in a good mood.
That is so fantastic to have been part of that.
It doesn´t happen that often so it´s really worth waiting for :-)
Anyway, with or without the Greek happenings we always have a great time.

The coctails are amazing, like desserts almost.

It´s easy to have a few too many :-)
The Greek beer ( Mythos) is a favorite of mine.
A light beer that goes with everything, really nice.
Ouzo and Metaxa is a must too.
And if you are visiting in September the Metaxa will fix any cold you might feel.
Late nights can be a little chilly.
But having one or two Metaxa 5 stars will get you warm enough. Trust me!

You never heard of Metaxa?
Don´t worry I made a seach for you and this is what I found:

*Metaxa Brandy

Metaxa is distinguished as the most famous Greek spirit worldwide.
It is misled as an actual brandy but in actual fact is something more.
Thus, when we are talking about Metaxa we refer to this unique spirit and not to a
brandy product.

It was invented by a silk trader named Spyros Metaxas in 1888.
He was from the Attica region - a province of Athens.
The grapes Savatiano, Sultanina and Black Corinth are locally grown and form the basis
of this spirit which is twice distilled and blended with aged Muscat wine from Samos,
then blended with a secret botanical mix and aged in hand made oak casks.
When served in a large brandy glass and warmed by the palm
of your hand, the perfumed aroma is a truly intoxicating experience.

Recently, the product has earned world recognition for its quality, color and taste.
Expressions of admiration and adjectives like "The Elixir of Life",
"The Nectar of the Gods", "The Blessed Spirit" accompanied Metaxa from its birth, till
this very day!
Metaxa is generally available in the following versions:
Three Star, Five Star, Seven Star and Twelve Star.
Each star represents a year that it has been aged in oak barrels for.
Hence the Metaxa 5 star is at least 5 years old.
Occasionally, you will find a Metaxa 'Private Reserve'
which is at least 20 years old.
There is no difference in terms of quality and production process between the different
Metaxa stars, as in every family, age is the only uncommon characteristic.
It is worth pointing out that other Metaxa products
considered as 'collector items' are occasionally available,
such as the 'Metaxa Grand Olympian Reserve', and 'Metaxa Golden Age'.*

So now you know :-)
And most Greek people will say it is in fact "The Nectar of the Gods".
There is no end to what Metaxa is supposed to cure you from.
Well, I am a beliver after all my bad colds while having a holiday in September.
They always give me a special mix with Metaxa, blackpeppar and lemon among the
ingrediants, and it works, period.
Just a friendly warning, take it easy, you don´t have to go through all sorts
every evening. I have seen too many dead drunk their first evening, and after that it
took at least 2 -3 days before they showed up again.
That is a waste of a good holiday.
Do as the locals do, drink a lot of water and you will be just fine.
Better to just taste a few and stay happy. Making the most of every evening ( night ).
Yes, night is a better word to use.

The publife is best between 11 in the evening and 2-3 in the morning.
They are supposed to close at 2 but not many follows that ;-)
However they do lower the music a little and shut the doors.
Inside the party can go on until morning, if there are enough guests that is.

There are lots of nice pubs and bars in Gouvia, just take your time and I am sure
you will find your favorite too.
There seems to be something for all, even a Mexican one, The PocoLoco.
For all of us living in Scandinavia the season is about to end for this year.
The last charter is going back to Sweden the 1st of October.
After that it is only regular flights but from UK it is still possible with charter until
mid November.
I didn´t make it this year either so I have to wait and dream for next year.
But I will make it back, that is a promise :-)
Yamas and bottoms up!
